sandwich lovers unite.

think about it.

what is it that makes a good sandwich so good?

i have enjoyed many many many sandwiches in my life, from the BLT (veggie bacon), to the grill cheese, to the PBJ, i have been all across the world of sandwiches. i have perfected recipes, invented my own, tasted from deli's and households from this mecca of a region and more.

before we get into this we must know the common understanding of what a sandwich is.

sand·wich

   [sand-wich, san-] Show IPA
noun
1.
two or more slices of bread or the like with a layer of meat, fish, cheese, etc., between each pair.

the court is laid out. you have your lines. you have your rules. of course in getting points, you must be sure of your goal. im guessing most people who craft a sandwich have the goal to make it a good and tasty sandwich. Isn't this a bit broad though?

i know of this older guy who loves rye. he swears it is the best bread ever. i dont even think he even buys normal bread. my point in bringing him up is that he may love rye, but its one of those types of bread that doesn't really do it for me. i don't eat pork, and very rarely do i enjoy a turkey, or beef sandwhich and those usually go well with rye.. yes, i may be a little crazy, but thats not quite what im getting at. im just saying everyone has their preferences.

where is it that typically has the best sandwich?
the best answer i can come up with is in a friend or family's home (perhaps maybe a hole in the wall deli, but the reasons are close to the same). in that home, they know you. they know what you like and what you don't like. they that you like one thinly spread layer of mayo (or in my case a big wet sloppy layer of mayo) on the slightly toasted bread. they know that you like the tomato to be a very thin cut. they know that you like a hint of salt on that tomato. they know that you like the cheese slightly melted but not enough to drip at all, on the slightly toasted bread.

but wait a second>... isnt there more than just these tangible scientific attributes? take the same example given, but take it out of context. if someone you had no association with gave you a sandwich of this caliber would you enjoy it the same?

i am not a big fan of brand recognition, but the facts are there. i know the couple times when a shorty i was into made me a sandwich there was something outside of the recipe that was being consumed. the recipe was fairly good, but the gesture made it excellent.

maybe this old guy rye, had some association with rye. maybe he grew up eating it. maybe someone turned him onto it. whatever the case, in my opinion, its not the actual rye itself that convinced him. there was something else. meataphyiscal rye.
